Austria has signed the Schengen Treaty, which eliminated the border controls between countries. The Schengen Area currently consists of twenty-five states and two cooperating countries which maintain internal borders - all members of the European Union (except GB and IRL), as well as Norway, Island and Switzerland.

The countries without border controls are: Austria, Belgium, (Bulgaria on 27. March 2011), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, (Romania on 27. March 2011), Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland. For visitors traveling from one of these countries, at this time there are no personal controls when entering Austria.

To maintain public order and safety, hoewever, border controls between these countries may be executed at any time. Visitors from a country which is not a member of the Schengen Treaty need only a valid passport or a valid passport with a valid visa.
